During the International Summer Course 2018 of Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto (UMP), 10 international students from Turkey, Afghanistan, Sudan, Italy, Germany, South Korea, and France learn how to make Jamu in Desa Beji, Purbalingga on Wednesday, 18 July 2018.
“Coming from their country, the participants are learning how to make Jamu, herbal cosmetics, and herbal medicine. The participants are interested in the program because they know that Indonesia has a lot of herbs and natural resources to be used as herbal medication,” said the committee of the program from International Affairs Office (IAO) UMP, Novan Andrianto, S.Pd.
According to him, Jamu is a new thing for the participants. They have known other kinds of herbal medicine, but the one like Jamu is something the just discovered in this program.
“They have never seen and tasted Jamu previously. That is why the host of Jamu Home Industry serves two kinds of Jamu, Beras Kencur and Kunyit Asem in order to be tasted by the participants. They said it is nice although the taste is a little bit strange,” Novan explained.
The host of Jamu home industry, Mrs. Ruswati, explained the ingredients to make jamu and its function for health before the participants start practicing.
Eileen Popp, one of participants from Germany, said that it is a nice chance for her to experience new thing, particularly in knowing the production of Jamu. “I expect to get new knowledge about how people can stay healthy with a low-risk medication.” She said.
This two-week program will take place not only in Purwokerto but also in Purbalingga, Gombong, and Yogyakarta. (nov)
